History

The history of Hoskote dates back to the Vijayanagara period. The region was ruled by the Sugatur Palegars, who were feudatories of the Vijayanagara Empire. The founder of Hoskote is believed to be Thammegowda, son of Devappa Gowda, the progenitor of the Sugatur Palegar dynasty. Between 1422 CE and 1464 CE, Thammegowda constructed a mud fort in the area. This newly built fort became known as “Hosa Kote” (New Fort), which later evolved into the name Hoskote. One of the most remarkable facts about Hoskote is that its fort was built nearly 75 years before Kempegowda constructed the famous Bengaluru Fort in 1535 CE. Following Thammegowda, several Palegars ruled Hoskote and contributed to its development: Thammegowda (1422–1464) Chikkaraya Thammegowda (1464–1542) Immadi Thammegowda (1542–1608) Mummadi Thammegowda (1608–1642) Mummadi Chikkaraya Thammegowda (1642–1670) After the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hoskote came under the control of the Adil Shahi rulers of Bijapur. It was later administered by Shahaji Bhonsle, father of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. After Shahaji’s death in 1664, the region passed under the rule of his son Venkoji Bhonsle. In 1756, Hoskote became part of the Kingdom of Mysore. During the British administration of Mysore between 1831 and 1881, Hoskote remained under British influence. Following India’s independence on 15 August 1947, Hoskote became part of the Mysore State and later Karnataka State.

Mythological Significance

The name “Hoskote” is derived from two Kannada words: Hosa = New Kote = Fort The town was named after the new fort constructed by Thammegowda during the 15th century.
