Overview

Meer Sahib General Stores was one of the most iconic landmarks in historic Whitefield, Bengaluru. Established in 1915, the store served as a commercial, social, and administrative center for Whitefield and its surrounding villages. Long before Whitefield became a global IT destination, this heritage store was the lifeline of the region.

History

The origins of Meer Sahib General Stores date back to 1915 when it was established by the grandfather of Dr. Meer Ziauddin within the historic Anglo-Indian settlement of Whitefield. Built on an expansive eight-acre property, the store quickly became an essential part of daily life in the region. During the early 20th century, Whitefield was a small settlement with limited access to goods and services. Meer Sahib General Stores bridged this gap by supplying groceries, medicines, household provisions, building materials, and other essential commodities. For several decades, the store catered to the needs of nearly fifty surrounding villages. Goods were transported primarily through the railway network and distributed from the store to nearby communities. The establishment became far more than a shopping destination. It evolved into a community hub and played a significant role in the development of Whitefield. Whitefield’s First Community Hub Meer Sahib General Stores holds a special place in Whitefield’s history because several important public services operated from its premises. The compound housed: Whitefield’s first Post Office Whitefield’s first Telephone Exchange Local Panchayat Office These services made the property one of the most important centers of communication and administration in the area during the early and mid-20th century.
