KASHI VISHWESHWAR TEMPLE, KADUGODI, BENGALURU

Kashi Vishweshwar Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in the Kadugodi area of Bengaluru. Located near Whitefield, this ancient temple stands as a testament to the region’s rich spiritual, cultural, and historical heritage. According to historical records, local traditions, and inscriptions found within the temple premises, Kashi Vishweshwar Temple is believed to have been constructed during the Chola period around the 11th century CE. The name “Kadugodi” is believed to have originated from two Kannada words: Kadu – Forest Gudi – Temple In ancient times, the area was covered with dense forests, and the temple stood as a sacred place of worship amidst the wilderness. Over the centuries, settlements gradually developed around the temple, eventually growing into the present-day Kadugodi locality. Local legends suggest that the original Shiva Linga was lost, after which a new Shiva Linga was brought from Kashi (Varanasi) and consecrated in the temple. This association with the holy city of Kashi led to the temple being known as Kashi Vishweshwar Temple.
